New mobilities management: mobility pioneers between first and second modernity

"Der Autor präsentiert Ergebnisse aus dem Projekt 'Mobilitätspioniere. Zum Strukturwandel der Mobilität unter den Bedingungen reflexiver Modernisierung' im Münchner Sonderforschungsbereich 536. Er beschreibt unterschiedliche idealtypische Strategien von 'Mobilitätsmanagement', wobei er den Akzent auf die Beschreibung von Konstellation von Mobilität und Immobilität, Bewegung und Bewegungspotenzialen (Motilität) legt. Er wirft die Frage auf, ob die gezeigten subjektorientierten Strategien im Umgang mit dem Mobilitätsdruck der Moderne eine veränderte Perspektive auf den strukturellen Wandel im modernen Mobilitätskonzept und der Mobilitätspraxis eröffnen. Die Relevanz dieser Frage und der empirischen Ergebnisse wird hier vor dem gesellschaftsdiagnostischen Hintergrund der Theorie reflexiver Modernisierung diskutiert. Als Fazit im Hinblick auf weiterführende Forschungen schlägt der Autor eine Unterscheidung von Transit- und Connectivity-Räumen vor. Dadurch werden die neuen Konfigurationen aus räumlicher, sozialer und virtueller Mobilität unter den Bedingungen reflexiver Modernisierung sinnvoll erforschbar." It shows different strategies of 'mobility management' and describes constellations of mobility and immobility, movement and motility (mobility potential). The author raises the question as to whether the reported subject-oriented strategies for coping with the modern 'mobility imperative' open up a perspective on a structural change in the modern concept of mobility and mobility practice. The theory of reflexive modernization is used to discuss this question and to help to understand the relevance of the empirical findings. In concluding, the paper focuses on further mobility research and introduces a distinction between 'transit spaces' and 'connectivity spaces' as relevant issues for research on new configurations of spatial, social and virtual mobility." Airports are powerful institutions and infrastructures defining and shaping the relations and connectivities of a world of flows and mobilities. They are ‘glocal infrastructures’, built interfaces on the thresholds of terri-torial and global scales. The talk of fundamental airport dependencies signals a new wave in the transport-driven modernisation of society and the economy. Political controversies over the whys and wherefores of giant airports rage in the very centre of the ‘mobile risk society’, not on the periphery. At few other social “loci” do the local and the global interface so tangibly as at the great transfer points of international air traf-fic in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or Madrid. "Da geh ich hin, check ein und bin weg!": Argumente für eine Stärkung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Mobilitätsforschung

"Das Thema Mobilität entwickelt sich seit einigen Jahren international zu einem interdisziplinären neuen und wichtigen Forschungsthema. Die klassischen disziplinären Schneidungen zwischen geographischer und sozialer Mobilitätsforschung stehen in Frage, die Rede ist von einem 'New Mobilities Paradigm' (John Urry). Im Zuge der Digitalisierung moderner Gesellschaften brechen grundlegende Fragestellungen nach dem Wesen der Mobilität und nach den sozialen Praktiken ihrer Realisierung auf, die bislang nur unzureichend erforscht sind. Basale Konzepte der Moderne wie Nähe und Ferne, An- und Abwesenheit und letztlich die raum-zeitlichen Vorstellungen hinsichtlich einer zunehmend entgrenzten Welt stehen zur Disposition, müssen neu überdacht und reformuliert werden. Bislang wurde Mobilität primär als Bewegung im sozialen wie im geographischen Raum interpretiert. Zwar thematisierten bereits Marx und Simmel die Beweglichkeit, das Bewegungspotenzial, sprich die Motilität von Gesellschaften, Kollektiven und Individuen. Aber unter dem Einfluss der Technisierung durch Informations- und Telekommunikationstechnologien, angesichts von einer annähernden Vollmotorisierung sowie dem dramatischen Abbau der 'Widerständigkeit des Raumes' hat Beweglichkeit erheblich an Dynamik gewonnen. Die so erweiterte Mobilitätsforschung zielt auf zwei Themenfelder: zum einen auf dem thematischen Komplex von Mobilität, Arbeit und Technik und zum zweiten auf die raumsoziologischen Debatte im Zusammenhang mit Mobilität und der Relevanz der Konzepte 'movement space' (Nigel Thrift), 'motility space' und 'Möglichkeitsräume'. Die Überlegungen zur Fortentwicklung der Mobilitätsforschung werden vor dem Hintergrund der Ergebnisse im Projekt 'Mobilitätspioniere. Global complexity: some remarks to the "Author meets critic session" at the DGS congress in 2004

Der Beitrag dokumentiert die Diskussion auf der "Author Meets Critic"-Veranstaltung zu John Urrys "Sociology Beyond Societies" auf dem 32. Kongress der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie (2004). Zunächst erläutert Urry den Grundgedanken seines Ansatzes, der auf eine Aufhebung der Trennung zwischen Naturwissenschaften und Gesellschaftswissenschaften hinausläuft. Unter dem Leitbild "Komplexität" wird die Analyse physischer und sozialer Welten integriert. Dabei werden auch Elemente von Hardt/Negris "Empire und Multitude"-Konzept aufgegriffen. 2018: Art & Mobilities Network Inaugural Symposium Instant Journal (Peter Scott Gallery)

"Mobilities has been gaining momentum through networks, conferences, books, special issues, exhibitions and in the practices of artists, writers and curators. In recognition of this activity we are forming an Art & Mobilities network through which to consolidate, celebrate and develop this work.Inspired by the recent foregrounding of Mobility and the Humanities (Pearce & Merriman, 2018) and drawing on last November's successful Mobile Utopia Exhibition amongst others, the Centre for Mobilities Research (CEMORE) at Lancaster University are pleased to hold a UK Art & Mobilities Network Inaugural Symposium 2018 on the 3rd of July 2018. The aim of the symposium is to bring together people in the UK who are active in the field of mobilities and art in order to discuss the distinctive contribution that art makes to mobilities research and vice versa. We would be delighted if you can join us for this one-day event to help shape the network, particularly in the context of a fast-changing world, not just socio-politically but in terms of the place of art in the academy and vice versa. There are nearly 30 key international artists and researchers gathered on this day both locally and via Skype. We invite all participants in the symposium to bring with them an artwork, artefact, written statement or quote that can be displayed as a ‘pop up’ exhibition.
